You found your race, registered for it, and purchased the perfect training plan to help you achieve your running and race goals. And about 8-weeks into your training, you find yourself struggling with some aches and discomforts you did not have before you began training or potentially sidelined due to a "running" injury. I get it. I have been there. I can empathize with that frustration. After 25 years of personal running experience ranging from 5k's to ultramarathons, triathlons, & Ironman(TM) triathlons; two college degrees in exercise physiology and sports medicine; several run coaching certifications; & over a decade of coaching runners & triathletes: preparing your body with a stability, mobility, strength, & gait training program is often the "make" or "break" factor in the "runner for life" equation.

Course Benefits

Increase in overall core & Joint stability & strength

Strength is beneficial for every runner. However, stability training deepens the connection between muscles and the nervous system (neuromuscular efficiency) resulting in the ability to stabilize joints and control posture.  Similar to the framing and joists of a home, the core or trunk of the body provide the base of support and protection during all movement patterns. Strength workouts & exercises are offered in this program as well as high-intensity interval training workouts including plyometric training.

Increases in pelvic stability

For women, post-partum pelvic floor stability is paramount for safe running. The pelvic floor is strengthened by very specific and targeted exercises. Over the 6-weeks, you will have an opportunity to learn about which muscles provide a base of support and how to increase and maintain function & stability.

Increased Mobility & joint range of motion

Running is a series of one-legged stances. Strength & stability provides support and mobility of joints allows for shock absorption from ground force reactions

We were truly born to run! But, what is the most common thing you hear yelled to children at the pool, in the kitchen, through a parking lot, and all around school? “Stop Running!” “Walk!”   

When we take up running as young and old adults we have to completely re-learn how to run. What if we were to never stop running? What if we were to give our children the opportunity to learn to run for fun, learn to run for health and longevity, and to run as a compliment to any lifestyle? 

Running, when done properly and with balance, is a phenomenal form of exercise. It strengthens the body’s heart, lungs, bones, muscles, and the mind. Running is a sport that can be done at any age with minimal experience needed; it requires very little equipment; it can be done almost anywhere; and it is a sport that can bring all ages and ability levels together to participate all at once offering a level of fellowship many other sports cannot.

Kids Run the Nation® is a turnkey program developed by The Road Runners Club of America designed to meet the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans outlined by the USDA. The program aims to introduce running and physical activity to children with an emphasis on participating daily as part of a healthy lifestyle regardless of age, experience, ability level, or gender.  

I have created a youth running organization within Soleful Running which implements the curriculum laid out in the RRCA’s Kids Run the Nation program. The mission of Soleful Running is to promote physical activity through running and empowering children with knowledge that will help them make healthy and safe lifestyle choices. This program is currently being offered at Harahan Recreation Center Park.
